When I was younger I wanted to be a teacher. You know those times when people ask you, “What you want to be when you grow up?” Well I always said teacher.
When I did, “grow up,” I ended up doing the whole 9-5 thing. Working in an office as a mail clerk and basically fell asleep every day. I absolutely hated it! I have to be moving and doing. Sitting at a desk is just not my calling.
I decided to create my own path.
I have always been the creative type, so I went back to school to follow another one of my passions, and that was doing hair. After graduating from hair college and a few years of working at other salons and renting chairs, I opened my own salon and I have never looked back.
I love doing people’s hair but it’s not just about the hair, it’s the whole experience. When people come to see me they get some relaxation, they get to tell me about their day and I get to tell them about mine. We vent, we laugh, we have coffee or tea and when they leave my hope is always that they left not just with a new haircut and style but that they have a little extra bounce in their step. A bounce that only comes from feeling good on the inside and out.
I often joke that I am a bit of a therapist as well as a stylist. I mean, come on. You have to agree that is true for many hair stylists. Hair-apy is a common thing! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I treat my clients as I would my friends and it’s important to me that they not only leave feeling happy with their cut but also that they can confidently say, “Go see Colleen at Waves Salon in Oshawa! You won’t be disappointed!”
