4 MIN READ – It’s January, which means everybody is in an, “Let’s do this!” mode in their business. I get it, that new year feeling. I’m right there with you. It’s pretty amazing to be able to start fresh with new ideas, goals, and plans. The question is how do you keep that feeling alive in your business for the entire year?

Start the year off with a plan – a content marketing plan

You have heard me talk about content marketing plans for a while now. What a content marketing plan does is force you to look at what you are doing, how you are doing it and why you are doing it. What is more motivating then having something to strive for?

Not sure what a content marketing plan is?

A content marketing plan requires you to sit down and write down your business goals and what marketing strategies you will use to achieve those goals. Oftentimes, the practice of creating the plan is almost as valuable as the actual plan itself.

Ask yourself:

  1. What has worked in the past?
  2. What is no longer working?
  3. Where can you improve?

Learn the ropes

New product coming out that can change how your business operates? Learn about it. New course on how to bring in more revenue? Take it. Not sure if you should be doing XYZ in your business? Research it.

I am brought back suddenly to my high school days and how I was DONE with school. There was nothing more I wanted to do after it was over than to just stop learning. The reality is, you never stop learning and you especially need to continue learning if you have a business. An investment in yourself is an investment in your business and whenever I take the time to learn more it always motivates me to keep going in my business.

Go big or go home

Taking a substantial risk is scary, but without a large risk, you can’t get a large reward. Failure is inevitable and happens to us all. We need to overcome the fear and bust it out of the park. The excuses are only going to get us so far. One of the things my dad always said was, “You have to spend money to make money.” Not something anyone with a business tends to want to hear, but there you have it, folks.

Answer each step you take with – how can I help them?

Us humans are nice people. We can be smart. We can be talented. We can be caring. We can also be selfish and egotistical and entitled. What’s in it for them is always the first question you need to ask. It is in fact always nicer to give than to receive. Oddly, or not oddly at all, this, “giving” translates to more business, which translates to more happiness, which translates to more motivation, which helps you keep that wahoo feeling going the whole year-long!

Blog your heart out!

Okay, I’m biased, and I don’t know if blogging motivates you per say, unless you are writing about motivation, but there are just so many reasons you should be blogging if you are a business owner. You can refer to all the fantastic reasons in my other blog post here.

Anytime you have a new idea, jot it down. You can create a journal with blog ideas. One of the best ways to come up with topics is merely answering your companies frequently asked questions interestingly. Use storytelling and examples to boost your reader’s interest and use back links to keep them on your website longer.

Accept the inevitable, life doesn’t care about your plans

There will be bumps in the road. There always are. When it happens, don’t stress, take the time you need and then consult the content marketing plan you started above and get back on the horse or the laptop or the stage, or, well – you get the idea.

I love this quote by Thomas Edison, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

Look back  and see how far you have come

Every quarter, look at what you have accomplished. It’s the best feeling in the world to look back and see how far you have come. Especially at the end of the year, take a good long look at everything that has happened and use that to push yourself forward. We forget that all the small things adds up to big things. Be proud of what you have done.

Now go out there and get started!
